The purpose of Quartethno is to deal with traditional music in an open-minded way and above all to include improvisations and ways of playing from jazz and improvised music traditions in the broad meaning of the word.
The group directly follows the tradition of the quartet Ornette Coleman conducted in the 60’s, quartet corresponding to the period of the split in the structures, then to the advent of Free Jazz.
This claimed relation can be recognised mostly at the instrumentation level, yet Quartethno’s aim is quite obviously completly different (different period and culture.)
Classical Arabic music is the first music Quartethno has chosen to study and deal with, especially Egyptian, Tunisian and Morocan rhythms and melodies.
After learning and arranging numerous traditional melodies, Alban Darche composed the other part of the present repertoire, inspired by the modes and metricals used in the composition of Arabic Classical themes. Thus, the repertoire offers a fair balance between composition and the necessity to include existing melodies with the intense notes of Arabic music.
